The arrival of spring means warmer temperatures, making it more enjoyable to spend more time outdoors. For some, however, seasonal allergies make it difficult to enjoy much of anything this time of year thanks to sneezing, sniffling, and itchy, watery eyes that are caused by an allergic reaction to pollen. Thankfully, however, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the impact your allergies have on your daily life:
- Whether you are taking an over-the-counter or prescription antihistamine, a nasal spray, or eye drops, be sure to follow the correct dosage schedule. Missing a dose or taking one late may allow your seasonal allergies to flare up. Be sure to consult with your physician before trying any new allergy medications.
- Though it may seem like seasonal allergies would be worse while outdoors, indoor spaces like carpets, bedding, and air filters make a great place for allergens to collect. Cleaning these areas regularly may help to keep the effects of seasonal allergies at bay.
- While outdoor temperatures can be nice this time of year, keeping windows open can let pollen into your apartment.
- Take your shoes off before you come inside to avoid tracking in pollen. Similarly, wash your hair before bed each night to prevent pollen from getting on your pillow.
If you are still struggling to find relief from your seasonal allergies, schedule an appointment with your physician to discuss your symptoms, triggers, and other forms of treatment – such as allergy shots – that may help to provide you with more effective relief from your seasonal allergies.
