Essential oils are the botanical extracts of various plant materials that give the plants the fragrance they have. And, while these oils have long been used as important active ingredients and flavor additives in many everyday products (think mouthwashes, toothpastes, lip balms, skin creams, and more), they also have many other household uses.
If you’ve been thinking about using essential oils, but aren’t sure where to begin, consider:
• Lavender oil, when you want an easy way to keep your clothes fresh. Simply place cotton balls scented with a few drops of lavender oil in your drawers and closets.
• Eucalyptus oil, when you want to deodorize your garbage can. Add 6 drops of the oil to a few inches of hot, soapy water at the bottom of your trash can. Swish it around, and then dump out the water.
• Peppermint oil, when you want relief from a headache. Make a mixture of a teaspoon of carrier oil (for example, almond oil) and three drops of peppermint oil, and then massage onto your temples and the back of your neck.
These are just some of the many ways you can use essential oils. As you can see, you can use essential oils for an assortment of purposes – from cleaning to easing discomfort and more.
