Getting a Good Night’s Rest

 
 

Insomnia, or just plain tossing and turning, can be frustrating for anyone who experiences it. Any type of worry or stress can get in the way of getting a good night’s sleep. And, when you don’t sleep well the night before, even the simplest of tasks the next day can become daunting.
Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help promote restful sleep to help ensure you wake with enough energy to take on the coming day:

  • Keep your sleep schedule consistent – Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can help to train your body and lead to more restful sleep.
  • Be mindful of what you eat and drink – Trying to sleep on an empty stomach or while too full can lead to discomfort that prevents you from falling asleep. It is also important to limit caffeine intake in the evenings. It can take hours for the effects of the caffeine from the cup of coffee you had after dinner to wear off. 
  • Create a comfortable environment – Creating an environment you feel relaxed in can help you fall asleep faster and get a more restful sleep. Factors like temperature, light, sound, and even your mattress should be considered. These things may be different for everyone. Based on your specific preferences, nightlights, earplugs, noise makers, or fans can be used to create your ideal sleeping environment.
  • Avoid long naps during the day – Sleeping for hours on end during the day can lead to insomnia and restlessness when it comes time for bed. For this reason, try not to nap for more than 30 minutes on a regular basis, and try not to nap too late in the day either. Of course, it is always important to listen to your body. If you feel like a longer nap is necessary, depriving yourself of sleep may do more harm than good.
  • Know when to consult with your doctor – If you have tried these tips but still struggle to get a good night’s sleep, it may be time to talk to your doctor, who can examine your medical history and determine if further care is needed.
