Making Homemade Lip Balm

Chapped lips can be a nuisance any time of year – whether from the summer sun or brisk winter air. Regardless of which drug store you shop at, the lip balm options seem to be endless – so how do you know which one you should choose? One solution is to make your own, putting you in control over the color and flavor of your lip balm. Making your own lip balm is also a great way to save money, since such a large quantity can be made from one batch of ingredients. Whether you want it for yourself or to give as a gift, making your own lip balm is a fun, easy activity that everyone can enjoy.

  • Step 1 – First, you’ll need to collect the ingredients – beeswax and coconut oil are essential. Optional ingredients include vitamin E oil, essential oil – like peppermint – for flavor, and powdered herbs – like beet root powder – for coloring. You’ll also need an empty container to put your lip balm in. Old Chap Stick tubes or empty Altoids containers work perfectly.
  • Step 2 – Melt 2 tablespoons beeswax and 2 tablespoons coconut oil in a double boiler or a small glass bowl over a boiling pot of water. When melted, remove the pan from the burner, but keep the mixture over the hot water so that it stays melted.
  • Step 3 – Mix in the optional ingredients. Use a few drops of vitamin E oil, a few drops of your essential oil for scent and taste, and a little of the powdered herbs for color. Remember, you can always add more of any of these if you feel there isn’t enough.
  • Step 4 – Quickly pour your lip balm mixture into its container to cool and let it sit. After several hours, your lip balm may be capped and is ready for use.
