The big move might seem ages away, but it’ll be here before you know it! Make sure you plan ahead to avoid the stress of a last-minute move. Here’s our moving checklist for a successful move into your new apartment:
Two Months Before the Move
While moving day is still pretty far out, now’s the time to start putting your plans into place. Establish your moving budget so you can determine whether to hire movers or proceed with a DIY move. Either way, don’t forget to take off work for moving day! Now’s a good time to get all of your ducks in a row, too—organize all of your essential paperwork so it doesn’t get lost, and look into transferring your renter’s insurance and utilities, if you can.
One Month Before the Move
As the move approaches, make sure to call and set up utilities you couldn’t transfer at your new place so you’re not left without hot water during the first week at your new residence! Set up a redirect with the postal service to your new address, too, and venture out to collect moving supplies, like boxes and packing tape. Before you start packing up, go through your stuff and create a donation pile, especially your closet—no sense in moving things you don’t really need anymore!
The Day of the Move
The big day’s finally here! Before you hand in your keys, it’s essential to schedule a walkthrough with your previous landlord to ensure everything looks good enough to get your security deposit back. Likewise, at your new place, schedule a similar walkthrough to avoid being blamed for any existing damage down the line—and don’t forget to take dated photos! Finally, get some cash from the ATM so you have it on hand to tip your movers (if you hired any).
