With more and more people these days becoming environmentally conscious, you may have decided to investigate ways you can reduce your ecological impact. One of the easiest ways to help the planet is by purchasing energy-efficient light bulbs that not only benefit the environment, but can help keep a little more green in your bank account as well.
There are two primary types of energy-efficient bulbs that you can choose from. They are:
- CFLs – CFLs, or compact fluorescent lamps, are bulbs that are essentially fluorescent lights wrapped into the shape of a standard incandescent bulb. They produce light by passing an electric current through argon gas and mercury vapor, which in turn creates ultraviolet light that excites a coating on the inside of the bulb, producing visible light. CFLs last approximately 8 to 15 times longer and consume only 30 percent of the electricity of standard incandescents, but typically cost around $4, 10 times the price of an incandescent bulb of comparable brightness. However, it should be noted that this increased up-front price can often be misleading; CFLs will more than pay for themselves over time with their energy savings and increased lifespan.
- LED Lamps – Light emitting diode lamps are the newest option in energy-efficient lighting. These bulbs can last up to 30 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs, and the best models on the market consume less than 15 percent of the energy of standard bulbs. However, as a byproduct of being new technology, LED lamps can often be very expensive, coming in at around $50 a bulb. While they are unparalleled in color fidelity, lifespan, and energy savings, their price means that, at the moment, they make the most sense for large-scale corporate use or for individuals looking to upgrade from their existing CFL lighting.
