Life doesn’t stop when you’re sleepy, and almost everyone has had a day when they are tired but still have quite a few important things to accomplish. However, completing life’s daily tasks while tired is a problem in and of itself, because even if you have the willpower to continue functioning when you’re exhausted, tiredness decreases your focus and makes you more likely to make errors. Fortunately, for days when you’re short on sleep but have a lot to do, you can take a power nap.
Power naps are brief, lasting only 15 to 20 minutes, but their convenient brevity is what makes them so useful, for a couple of reasons. Not only do they not take much time, but the short sleep is enough for your body to enter the first two sleep cycles, giving you many of the benefits of having rested, without letting you enter a deep sleep. This helps you to be alert and awake without the drowsiness that sometimes accompanies longer naps.
Here are a few things that you should have access to before you take your power nap:
- A comfortable spot where you can nap without aches or pains later
- An alarm of some sort (a cell phone alert will work just fine)
- A caffeinated beverage or anything else that will help you wake up
Then, all you have to do is set your alarm for around 15 to 20 minutes in the future, and take a nap. Drink your caffeinated drink just before you nap, as it takes caffeine a while to process in your body, and the drink will actually help you become alert faster when it’s time to wake up.
