Generating some trash in your day to day life is unavoidable, but what you may not realize is that it’s extremely easy and economical to reduce the amount of garbage you produce. Not only are you helping to preserve the Earth’s resources and keep the landfills from overflowing, but adhering to the reuse/recycle mantra also helps you save money and simplify your life.
The average American produces about 29 pounds of garbage each week, which is 1,600 pounds in a year. Do your part to reduce these numbers by:
- Buying in bulk. Not only are products in bulk less expensive, but you also get much more product in less packaging. Also try and avoid foods that are individually or overly packaged and, as always, be sure to recycle all packaging.
- Keeping a set of three or four reusable bags in the backseat of your car will prevent you from having to get new plastic bags each time you go to the store. Reusable mesh produce bags are also a great idea if you want to separate your fruits and veggies from the rest of the groceries. If you forget your reusable bags and absolutely must get paper or plastic bags, be sure to recycle these.
- Avoiding disposable kitchenware, like paper plates, plastic utensils, and Styrofoam coffee cups. Invest in a few reusable travel coffee mugs, water bottles, and a washable set of picnic dishes that can be used outside or on the go.
- Never trashing old clothes, appliances, books, toys, or electronics – donate them instead! Gently worn clothing and used household items, if in relatively good condition, may find a home somewhere else if you donate those items to a local charity.
