If you suffer from seasonal allergies or always seem to have a cold, you understand how unpleasant blocked sinuses can be. If you are looking for relief, using a neti pot might be a great way to clear out your sinuses. Neti pots are small clay, glass, ceramic, or plastic containers that are used for nasal irrigation, or the process of clearing out the sinuses with sterilized water. The neti pot has been in use in some form since the beginning of recorded history, originating in India, where it was called “Jala Neti,” or “water cleansing” in Sanskrit.
You can purchase a neti pot at any local pharmacy, supermarket, or general store. To prepare your neti pot for use, fill it up with sterilized lukewarm water or a saline solution, which can also be purchased at any local pharmacy or drugstore. It is important that the water be absolutely sterile so as to avoid infection, so if you prefer not to use a store-bought saline solution or sterilized water, ensure that the water you use has been adequately boiled or otherwise purified.
To use the neti pot itself, slowly pour the water down one nostril and allow it to drain out of the other. The process will be much more comfortable if you tilt your head slightly to one side and breathe through your mouth. Then, repeat with the other nostril for best results.
While using a neti pot is simple, please remember to consult your physician before beginning a neti pot regimen in your Alachua apartment, especially if you have any pre-existing sinus conditions. With any luck, soon you’ll be breathing much easier.
