Dusting is one chore you don’t want to neglect at your apartment – especially if you suffer from allergies. However, selecting the right material to dust with is incredibly important to get a good cleaning. For example, using a feather duster only pushes the dust around, leaving it airborne to settle somewhere else. To eliminate dust from surfaces in your apartment, consider using a damp cloth or a microfiber duster to trap dust.
Additionally, it’s important to start dusting from the top of the room and work down, so that any loose dust from higher surfaces gets cleaned up as you go. And, while many people remember to dust the most visible surfaces, there are a number of spots that often get overlooked. Here are a few places you might be forgetting to dust:
- Ceiling fans – Our One 51 Place apartments have ceiling fans in all living rooms, and their blades, motors, and light shades are all spots where dust tends to collect.
- Behind appliances – Both small and large appliances tend to collect dust. Regularly dust behind your coffee maker, toaster, and other small appliances, and aim to dust behind your refrigerator, oven, and other large appliances twice a year.
- Blinds – The color-coordinated blinds in our apartments are another spot you might be forgetting to dust. Put an old sock over your hand and gently run it along the slats of your blinds once a month.
- Air vents – Both ceiling vents and the air intake grates for cooling systems tend to collect a lot of dust. Be sure to wipe them down every once in a while.
When you’re done dusting the surfaces in your apartment, be sure to vacuum the floors to get rid of any dust that fell to the ground.
