Don’t have a green thumb? No problem. Pothos and ZZ plants are two hearty houseplants that are easy to care for and even easier to love, which is why they’re among the best plants to keep at your apartment. Here is what you need to know:
Pothos
Pothos—or Epipremnum aureum if you want to impress your friends—is definitely one of the easiest house plants to maintain. A lush vining plant, pothos has collected a variety of interesting names, including Devil’s Ivy, Silver Vine, Hunter’s Robe, and Ceylon Creeper. As that last name suggests, pothos is a creeper. And no, that doesn’t mean this plant will watch you while you sleep; it means that as they grow, pothos plants develop long tendril-like vines that look especially wonderful cascading down from the top of a bookshelf.
Pothos plants can usually be found at your local grocery store and only cost a few bucks. Moreover, they don’t require much water or sunlight, making them very easy to care for. Pothos is also a great apartment plant because it can grow in either soil or water and be propagated very easily. So, when your friends and neighbors become enamored with your beautiful pothos plant, you can just snip off a few of the tendrils, tuck them in a small vase with water, and share the love.
ZZ Plants
When it comes to houseplants, Zamioculcas zamiifolia is in a genus of its own—literally. Commonly known as the ZZ plant, the Zuzu plant, the Zanzibar gem, or the emerald palm, these plants are great for apartments because they are tough as nails. You can shoot ‘em, stab ‘em, drown ‘em, starve ‘em, but you won’t be able to kill ‘em. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but these plants are incredibly resilient and about as low maintenance as it gets. They only need water once every two weeks, and they require minimal sunlight to live.
Another reason ZZ plants are a popular option is because they have air purifying abilities. According to a NASA study, these plants have been shown to remove toxins, such as xylene, toluene, and benzene, from the air. Unlike pothos, which vine outward, ZZ plants grow upward and can get pretty tall. So, if you want a house plant with some height, this will be a better option than a pothos.
